THE CHALLENGE: STOPPING ENZYME ACTIVITY AND MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION AT INDUSTRIAL SCALE

Commercial food processing facilities handling harvested fruits and vegetables require an exact, predictable pre-cooking method to stop natural enzyme activity before freezing, canning, or packaging. Failing to accurately regulate this thermal stage results in accelerated product color degradation, loss of nutritional values, off-flavors, and survival of airborne microbes. Traditional batch-blanching methods struggle with uneven thermal distribution, bruising sensitive products through aggressive mechanical handling, and creating severe sanitary hurdles due to complex, hard-to-reach physical internal geometries. The challenge was to develop a gentle, continuous thermal processing platform that permits precise residence time controls, minimizes energy loss, and ensures thorough, rapid equipment sanitation.

THE ABCO SOLUTION

ABCO engineered a highly efficient, skid-mounted Screw Blancher System that utilizes steam and water thermal dynamics to soften washed products, preserve vibrant natural colors, dispense airborne microbes, and increase overall digestibility and taste values. By controlling the precise rotation speed of an integrated internal screw conveyor, the system allows operators to easily adapt residence blanching times to perfectly match the softening characteristics of different fruits and vegetables. ABCO collaborates directly with food processors to design, build, and install individual pieces of equipment or complete integrated processing lines and control systems tailored to exact production goals.

TECHNOLOGY & SYSTEM INTEGRATION

  • Precision Screw Retention Dynamics: Integration of an internal screw conveyor system where blanching and cooking retention times are dynamically regulated via screw rotational speeds, allowing customized adjustments for diverse product varieties.
  • Advanced Thermal Control Array: Features a comprehensive mild steel steam flow control package combined with direct or PICK Heater steam-injection arrays to heat process water rapidly, monitored via strategically located troubleshooting pressure gauges.
  • Sanitary Fluid Circulation Loop: Heavy-duty water circulation pump assembly outfitted with a custom filter matrix to continuously move process water while trapping loose particulate matter away from the product stream.
  • Skid-Mounted Material Transfer Matrix: A space-efficient, skid-mounted unit combining an engineered infeed chute, inner product lift pockets, an internal screw conveyor, and a direct-drop discharge chute for seamless line integration.
  • Certified Equipment Joinery Standards: Full facility certification from the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) to Welding Standards CSA W.47.1 (Steel) and CSA W.47.2.M (Aluminum) paired with an internal quality assurance system to guarantee flawless sanitary production.

THE CUSTOM ENGINEERED METAL ADVANTAGE

  • 304 Stainless Steel Sanitary Single Skin: Fabricated completely using 304 food-grade stainless steel with a specialized single-skin wall design that provides completely smooth internal and external surfaces for rapid, ultra-hygienic cleaning.
  • Rapid Maintenance & Access Infrastructure: Engineered with large access doors on top of the machine alongside a specialized hinged cover access port, ensuring fast sanitation inspections and minimal line downtime.
  • Optional Clean-In-Place (CIP) Integration: Available with an optional automated CIP network utilizing rotating spray nozzles mounted throughout the machine’s interior to slash manual washdown times.
  • Optional Steam-Miser PLC Optimization: Available with an advanced “Steam-Miser” PLC Control System to continuously monitor thermal load variations, dramatically reducing industrial steam wastage and facility energy expenses.

KEY PERFORMANCE FEATURES

  • Food-Grade 304 Stainless Construction: Features a single-skin frame design with matching options for 304 SS footpaths, stairs, and non-skid fiberglass walkways.
  • Advanced Steam & Utility Controls: Equipped with a mild steel steam flow package, PICK Heater options, direct water circulation pumps, and strategic troubleshooting gauges.
  • Versatile Mechanical Processing Layout: Skid-mounted blueprint comprising infeed/outfeed chutes, an internal screw conveyor, inner lift pockets, and top access doors.
  • CWB & Quality System Compliance: Manufactured strictly under certified CWB CSA W.47.1 and CSA W.47.2.M welding standards backed by a rigorous quality assurance system.

THE RESULT

The resulting industrial screw blancher system delivers uncompromising thermal processing reliability, absolute sanitation safety margins, and maximum asset value to commercial packers. By transitioning away from standard catalog alternatives and adopting ABCO’s fully welded, 304 stainless steel single-skin engineering, processing facilities achieve premium product consistency while significantly lowering maintenance overhead. The option to integrate automated interior CIP nozzles and the energy-saving “Steam-Miser” PLC system ensures that production teams maximize daily yield outputs, support corporate sustainability targets, and drastically reduce utility overhead costs.
